Chapter Seven

Making Trades

They walked back through the market, the kitten cradled in Kiki’s arms, and turned down a dark hallway. The sound was quieter here, not as much echo. Kiki breathed deeply. He liked it quiet. The cat seemed to as well. She stopped shivering and rubbed her face with a paw.

“What is she?” Kiki asked the fishy alien. They passed closed doors with weird sounds coming from behind them. A purple door growled. A blue one gurgled. “And where are we?”

“The zoo. Animals of all kinds. She’s a felion. And I’m Morty.”

“A feline? Like a cat.”

“No. A felion. Like a lion, but tiny. Just wait until you hear her roar. It’s the cutest thing ever.”

The cat hissed. It seemed to understand what Morty was saying, and he laughed.

“Yes, little one, I know you think you’re tough. Through here,” Morty said and went through a door.

Inside the walls were lined with cages. Inside each cage was another felion, in a rainbow of colors. The one Kiki held was a normal brown and sable, but he saw yellow ones and green ones and bright pink ones. All of them reached their paws out toward him, meowing and hissing and growling.

“What are you doing with all of them?” Kiki asked.

“You can adopt them. Anyone can take one home if they’d like. I only ask for an exchange of fish so I can feed the others.”
